These incidental findings are far more common than one might guess. About 1/3 of all CTs performed in an emergency department will have at least 1 incidental finding. Most of them will be benign and of no importance. But some represent an opportunity to intervene early and prevent bad outcomes from happening to patients. Some studies show that only about 10% of these incidental findings make their way into the dismissal summaries, and even fewer receive follow-up.
